Getting There "I have been messing around in studios
since I was at school. My best friend's dad owned Clover Studios (now Sun Studios) in Kippax St Surry
Hills. We would be in there every weekend recording ideas and experimenting with different
ways of getting sounds onto tape. It was a very valuable experience having all that free
time to learn and to try out different ways of doing things in a proper commercial setup.
Since then I have had various home recording systems which became progressively better as
time went on. Getting good sounds on not so good gear was a challenging exercise, but it
does teach you a lot".
"The gear they have now is so much more
advanced and opens up a lot more possibilities with great effects and editing
capabilities.. still, you still have to know how to use it to get the best results". |
Save Money
How? ... Simple, record at
Lighthouse Studios. Flat Rate $50 per hour.
Other ways to save.
Have your material as well organised as possible before even thinking
about walking into a studio.
The clearer the picture of what you want a song to sound like, the quicker
it can be achieved and the less it will cost you in studio time.
Things worth thinking about.
- Is the song be an album track or are you aiming at radio airplay?
How long is the song?
Is it too long or too short?
- Do you want harmonies? If so where and which harmony parts.
Does the arrangement work or could it be trimmed down or extended for a
better result?
- Does it really need a guitar solo or would keyboards be better? Is the
solo to long/short?
Does the feel work? etc.
Careful consideration of these things beforehand can help save valuable
recording studio time and lead to a much better end result. |
