1) Thanks
First off, we would like to thank everyone for what could only
be described as a wonderful response to our first newsletter. There was a sea of
enquiries and applications to be on the site and lots of positive comments... it
gives us that warm and fuzzy feeling that our efforts aren't in vain, and that
there is a real call for a Sydney Music Web(site). Thanks to Christie Eliezer
for giving us a plug in his column in Drum Media, Beat (Melbourne), Hype
(Perth), and db(Adelaide). Also thanks to Phil Tripp from IMMEDIA for his
support. IMMEDIA is the AustralAsian Music Industry Directory http://www.immedia.com.au
Thanks also to Anne-Lisse Larson for her design of our home page. Web
design, banners.. anne-lise@bigpond.com
2) New Message Boards
It was suggested by someone to have the message board going
chronologically the other way. i.e. the last posting at the top. We now
have 2 new message boards. One is for listing events/gigs, http://www.voy.com/28713/ the
other is for 'general' messages, http://www.voy.com/29134/ . The
old message board is still up for the time being, but will be taken down soon.
If you have a message there, you may wish to transfer it to one of the new
'boards'. There is a link to them on the home page. www.sydneymusicweb.com/index.html

8) Nabster & Prince
While Napster has lost it's long-running legal battle to keep its
free music-sharing service, the very left field and lateral thinking
Prince, Sign, Symbol or whatever he is calling himself these days, has
given Nabster the first track of his forthcoming album The Rainbow
Children. It seems Prince sees a way to work it to his own advantage.
Nabster will soon be subscription based along with the new record company based
site, MusicNet, which will offer songs from EMI, Bertelsman and Warner.
Hmm... Wonder who will be keeping tabs on the artists royalties.

15) Music Industry Skills - Jack
Pledge
Once upon a time, or so goes the faire
tale, all you had to do was to practice hard, play good and make people happy to
succeed in the Music Biz. If you did those things, eventually some enterprising
manager or an estute A&R guy would discover you, take you off to the
recording studio with your great new songs, and PRESTO!, you're a star!
Well, perhaps that was once true. But most people succeeding in the Music
Business do so because they treat it as a business with marketing plans and
clever promotional ideas and budgets and cultivated networks of contacts within
the industry. New South Wales TAFE system (in concert with Ausmusic) has
incorporated into the School of Business a curriculum of Music Industry
Skills covering a wide variety of subjects including Management, Marketing and
Promotion, Finance and Copyright, as well as touching on such practical skills
as the operation of small PA and lighting rigs, commercial songwriting and entry
level group performance, all taught by seasoned professionals. For the full
article go to http://www.sydneymusicweb.com/articles.htm.

Australian
Music Radio Airplay Project
AMRAP
stands for the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project. It's funded by the
Federal Government and the overall goal is "to promote Australian Music
through community broadcasting" .Basically the idea is to acknowledge the
critical role that community broadcasters play in developing Australian music of
all varieties and to provide resources to
allow them to continue and expand that commitment to Australian music. Among the
initiatives being developed by the project is a radio distribution service.
Based on comprehensive information we're collecting about the specialist and
general programming of community radio around the country, AMRAP will be able to
provide a number of services to help musicians get their music to radio in the
most effecient way. We'll also be reporting back on the sorts of things that are
being played around the country. For more inofrmation about AMRAP and community
broadcasting contact Paul Mason
pmason@cbaa.org.au.
